01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Would you rather focus on sashimi, or sample a little of everything from tempura to simmered dishes? At Mishimaya, the courses let you choose the direction of the meal. The sashimi course begins with assorted small dishes and sashimi, followed by simmered fish, tempura, rice, pickles and a final soup. The restaurant says it can also serve the rice course partway through the meal on request. The chef’s mini-course, by contrast, offers small portions of seasonal Japanese dishes such as a starter, sashimi and a simmered dish. It comes with freshly cooked white rice from a clay pot and is available for parties of two or more.

One diner who tried the mini kaiseki course said the dishes arrived one at a time and that the meal was filling despite its small-portion format. They particularly remembered the flounder sashimi, a simmered dish and the clam miso soup. For a fish-focused lunch, the sashimi set and sushi set are also options. The sashimi set comes with tempura, a small side dish, rice and miso soup; the sushi set pairs nine pieces of chef’s choice nigiri and four pieces of sushi roll with tempura, a small side dish and miso soup. Another visitor mentioned enjoying the small boat-shaped platter of sashimi in the sashimi set. Choosing between a generous serving of sashimi and a meal built around nigiri and rolls gives lunch a different character.

For a more celebratory meal, the kaiseki course includes sashimi, simmered, grilled and fried dishes, among others, and finishes with mixed rice cooked in a clay pot. A course with Kuroge wagyu shabu-shabu lets you choose sushi or eel rice to finish; the restaurant says seafood shabu-shabu can be arranged instead. Private rooms are available, and one visitor described enjoying a leisurely meal in one. The listed set meals and courses require reservations at least two days before a business day, so call ahead to confirm the menu and your preferred date.
